"Without such donations, we would be unable to carry out this work", said Lisa-Marie Scherer of the Balthasar children's hospice in Olpe, "so I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all at Dallmer" There were certainly smiling faces all-round at the recent presentation of €2,070 by the works council and the management of the local company, Dallmer.
Balthasar is one of just 12 children hospices in Germany and was the first of its kind when it was established in Olpe in 1998. The non-profit organisation has eight care places for children and a further four for young adults. Each year, this allows them to accommodate and care for some 300 seriously ill children and young adults and their families for a few days or weeks. However, according to Lisa-Marie Scherer, the demand for such places sadly far outstrips supply,
so they are exceedingly grateful for such donations which are always badly needed. Balthasar covers some 70% of its costs through voluntary donations, 30% is covered by health and nursing care insurance companies. "All donations go directly and 100% towards the care of the children", said the director of public relations during her meeting with Dallmer. As well as nursing care, the children receive key essentials, such as individual and personal attention and the ability to spend as much time as possible with family. The donations also enable the hospice to offer additional activities, such as music therapy.
So the Dallmer works council and management are particularly proud of the generosity and support of their colleagues. The collection made before and during this year's annual informal summer festival garnered the princely sum of €1,035. "We are proud to say that our collection yielded considerably more than last year", said works council chairman, Marcel Kirschner, who was clearly pleased with the result and added with a wink, "the fact that our management team promised to double the collected sum was no doubt a huge motivator for some". So Lisa-Marie Scherer was delighted to accept the donation of €2,070 - in support of the wonderful work performed at Balthasar. Dallmer and all who participated in the collection would like to think that others will be inspired to do something similar.
